NATO helicopters end Kabul hotel siege, 7 dead Posted: 28 Jun 2011 06:55 PM PDT NATO helicopters end Kabul hotel siege, 7 dead Amir Shah and Solomon Moore, The Associated Press, Kabul, Afghanistan | Wed, 06/29/2011 8:28 AM A |A |A| NATO helicopters fired rockets at gunmen on the rooftop of a besieged Kabul hotel early Wednesday, ending a more than four-hour standoff betwee militants and police that left at least seven dead and eight others wounded, Afghan officials said. Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said six suicide bombers attacked the Inter-Continental hotel frequented by Afghan officials and foreign visitors. He said two were killed by hotel guards at the bginning of the attack and four others either blew themselves up or were killed in the airstrike or by Afghan security forces. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the rare, nighttime attack in the capital – an apparent attempt to show that they remain potent despite heavy pressure from coalition and Afghan security forces. The attackers were heavily armed with machine guns, anti-aircraft weapons, rocket-propelled grenades, hand grenades and grenade launchers, the Afghan officials said. Afghan police rushed to the scene and firefights broke out. They battled for hours with gunmen who took up positions on the roof. Some Afghan provincial officials were among the 60 to 70 guests staying at the hotel. Abdul Zahir Faizada, who is head of the local council in Herat province in western Afghanistan, was staying at the hotel. He planned to attend a conference in Kabul on Wednesday to discuss plans for Afghan serity forces to take the lead for securing an increasing number of areas of the country between now and 2014 when international forces are expected to move out of combat roles. Afghans across the country were in the city to attend. “We were locked in a room. Everybody was shooting and firing,” said Faizada who was staying at the hotel with the mayor of Herat city and other officials from the province. “I heard a lot of shooting.” Deputy police chief in Kabul, Daoud Amin, said seven people died in the attack and eight other people – two policemen and six civilians – were wounded. The attackers are not counted in that death toll. Nazar Ali Wahedi, chief of intelligence for Helmand province in the south, called the assailants “the enemy of stability and peace” in Afghanistan. Wahedi, too, was in town to attend Wednesday’s transition conference, which was being held at a government building in the capital. “Our room was hit by several bullets,” Wahedi said. “We spent the whole night in our room.” The attack began around 10:30 p.m. local time Tuesday and ended around 3 a.m. Wednesday. U.S. Army Maj. Jason Waggoner, a spokesman for the U.S.-led coalition fighting in Afghanistan, said the helicopters fired on the roof where militants had taken up positions. He said they killed three gunmen and that Afghan security forces clearing the hotel worked their way up to the roof and engaged the remaining insurgents. As the helicopters attacked and Afghan security forces moved in, four massive explosions rocked the hotel. Officials at the scene said the blasts occurred when security forces either fired on suicide bombers or they blew themselves up. After the gunmen were killed, the hotel lights that had been blacked out during the attack came back on. Afghan security vehicles and ambulances were removing the dead and wounded from the area. Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid quickly claimed responsibility for the attack in a telephone call to the AP, then later issued a statement claiming that Taliban attackers killed guards at a gate and entered the hotel. “One of our fighters called on a mobile phone and said: ‘We have gotten onto all the hotel floors and the attack is going according to the plan. We have killed and wounded 50 foreign and local enemies. We are in the corridors of the hotel now taking guests out of their rooms – mostly foreigners. We broke down the doors and took them out one by one.”‘ The Taliban often exaggerate casualties from their attacks. The statement did not disclose the number of attackers, but only said one suicide bomber had died. A few hours into the clashes, an Afghan National Army commando unit arrived at the scene. Initially, the U.S.-led military coalition said the Afghan Ministry of Interior had not requested any assistance from foreign forces. But later, the NATO helicopters arrived on the scene at the hotel on a hill overlooking the capital. Guests inside the hotel said they heard gunfire echoing throughout the heavily guarded building. Jawid, a guest at the hotel, said he jumped out a one-story window to flee the shooting. “I was running with my family,” he said. “There was shooting. The restaurant was full with guests.” The attack occurred nearly a week after President Barack Obama announced he was withdrawing 33,000 U.S. troops from Afghanistan and would end the American combat role by the end of 2014. Before the attack began on Tuesday, officials from the U.S., Pakistan and Afghanistan met in the capital to discuss prospects for making peace with Taliban insurgents to end the nearly decade-long war. “The fact that we are discussing reconciliation in great detail is success and progress, but challenges remain and we are reminded of that on an almost daily basis by violence,” Jawed Ludin, Afghanistan’s deputy foreign minister, said at a news conference. “The important thing is that we act and that we act urgently and try to do what we can to put an end to violence.” The Inter-Continental – known widely as the “Inter-Con” – opened in the late 1960s, and was the nation’s first international luxury hotel. It has at least 200 rooms and was once part of an international chain. But when the Soviets invaded Afghanistan in 1979, the hotel was left to fend for itself. It was used by Western journalists during the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001. On Nov. 23, 2003, a rocket exploded nearby, shattering windows but causing no casualties. Twenty-two rockets hit the Inter-Con between 1992 and 1996, when factional fighting convulsed Kabul under the government of Burhanuddin Rabbani. All the windows were broken, water mains were damaged and the outside structure pockmarked. Some, but not all, of the damage was repaired during Taliban rule. Attacks in the Afghan capital have been relatively rare, although violence has increased since the May 2 killing of Osama bin Laden in a U.S. raid in Pakistan and the start of the Taliban’s annual spring offensive. On June 18, insurgents wearing Afghan army uniforms stormed a police station near the presidential palace and opened fire on officers, killing nine. Late last month, a suicide bomber wearing an Afghan police uniform infiltrated the main Afghan military hospital, killing six medical students. A month before that, a suicide attacker in an army uniform sneaked past security at the Afghan Defense Ministry, killing three people. Other hotels in the capital have also been targeted. In January 2008, militants stormed Kabul’s most popular luxury hotel, the Serena, hunting down Westerners who cowered in a gym during a coordinated assault that killed eight people. An American, a Norwegian journalist and a Philippine woman were among the dead. A suicide car bomber in December 2009, struck near the home of a former Afghan vice president and a hotel frequented by Westerners, killing eight people and wounding nearly 40 in a neighborhood considered one of Kabul’s safest. And in February 2010, insurgents struck two residential hotels in the heart of Kabul, killing 20 people including seven Indians, a French filmmaker and an Italian diplomat. Doctors debate changes to clocks Posted: 28 Jun 2011 06:51 PM PDT By Nick TriggleHealth correspondent, BBC News, in Cardiff Changing the clocks could reduce deaths on the road, supporters argue Doctors are throwing their weight behind a bid to move the clocks in the UK forward by an hour in both the winter and summer. Delegates at the British Medical Association conference in Cardiff will argue later that it will help improve health as well as save lives. The move would bring the UK in line with Central European Time. A bill is already progressing through Parliament calling for the issue to be looked at. It says if an official analysis suggests there would be benefits, then the system could be piloted for three years. Supporters have argued such a move would lead to an extra 235 hours of daylight after work each year and reduce road deaths by between 80 and 100. Research has also suggested tourism would get a boost. Previous attempts to change the system have faltered following opposition from Scotland where some places would not see daylight until 10am in the depths of the winter. But Andrew Green, a GP from Hull, said the problem was confined to the north of Scotland and could be avoided by measures such as flexible starting times for schools for a few months. He also pointed out that research suggested it was better to drive in the dark in the morning as people were more alert. But he added: "In the end you have to go for what gives the greatest benefit for the greatest number. Changing the clocks would mean people are more likely to be active. "It would encourage children to stop playing on the computer and go outside instead of risking getting run over in the dark." Scottish opposition Professor Vivienne Nathanson, the BMA's head of science and ethics, said: "I think it should certainly be looked at with a trial to see if it really would save lives." She also said the UK could look at having different time zones if it did not work for some parts of the country – although this is something that Prime Minister David Cameron has said he would not want to see. A range of other organisations have already given their backing to changing the system, including the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, which has been campaigning for it for decades. But the Scottish Government said it was still opposed to the move. A spokeswoman said: "Changing the system would adversely affect Scotland, which is why we oppose it. The impact would be felt by rural communities and outdoor workers and businesses, and could potentially increase the danger of children travelling to school in the dark." Clock changes have been tried in the past. During World War II clocks were moved forward by an hour to maximise productivity and ensure people got home safely before the blackout. Between 1968 and 1971 BST was kept throughout the year. source: bbcuk Berita Lain:

Tom Hanks explores lighter side of unemployment Posted: 28 Jun 2011 06:46 PM PDT LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Who knew that getting downsized could be such a “laff riot?” Where “Company Men” found stark drama, even tragedy, in losing a job, Tom Hanks, ever the optimist, sees an opportunity for laughs and romance. The title character in “Larry Crowne” has his life go suddenly out of balance — and the film experiences a similar problem. Sure, the film is a romantic comedy starring Hanks and Julia Roberts, but every scene is on the prowl for laughs at the expense of the inherent drama in the lives of its colorful characters. Fans of the two stars — among the most popular actors in Hollywood over the past two decades-plus — probably won’t mind the light, sitcom approach, but there was a much more meaningful, if somewhat darker, movie in the story Hanks dreamed up with the help of Nia Vardalos. Positioned perfectly for a July 4th weekend release, the film, which sees Hanks performing multiple duties of director, co-writer, co-producer and star, should be a winner at the box office. The problematic approach is evident in the film’s first key scene. Hanks’ Larry Crowne, an affable middle-level manager of a big-box store, gets fired when new ownership dislikes the fact that he never went to college. But the scene is played for comedy. Certainly you can see the pain in Larry’s face, but the managers doing the dirty deed are smug, unfeeling caricatures. This continues throughout the film. Roberts’ character, Mercedes, a burned-out public-speaking teacher, is caught up in a disastrously crumbling marriage. Her husband (Bryan Cranston) has gone from a respected published author to a deadbeat who surfs the Internet for porn. What caused such a profound change in the man — not to mention Mercedes’ sour attitude toward her job and students — is never investigated but rather used as the source for further comedy. “Larry Crowne” mostly feels like the pilot for a sitcom that needs to set up several comic situations. Underwater with his mortgage and out of work, Larry holds a yard sale, which sets up the first situation: His neighbors (Cedric the Entertainer and Taraji P. Henson), living off the earnings of a big game-show win, hold daily yard sales, where the comic banter, bargaining and advice-giving fill several of the movie’s scenes. Larry then decides to go to a community college, where the speech class taught by Mercedes and an Economics 1 course taught by George Takei’s weirdly funny professor set up two more sets of characters. Finally, when Larry trades in his gas-guzzling SUV for a motorbike, he gets recruited into a motorcycle “gang” headed by the vivacious Talia (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) and her boyfriend Dell (Wilmer Valderrama). Indeed, Talia — a dangerously beautiful young woman who develops a flirtatious relationship with the middle-aged Larry right under the wary eyes of her boyfriend — gives Larry a complete make-over: She performs feng shui on his house, redoes his entire wardrobe and threatens to completely distract the romantic comedy away from Hanks and Roberts. Even Mercedes assumes for much of the movie that they’re a couple. Hanks has a lot of good ideas for a comedy about a man remaking his life, but he might have chosen the wrong writing partner in Vardalos. Her comic writing tends toward on-the-money scenes with her main characters and pure caricatures for all her minor ones. She got away with this — boy, did she ever! — in the hugely successful “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” which Hanks produced. But here, the determination to go for easy laughs undermines any chance for meaty drama. This is especially true for Roberts’ Mercedes. If you didn’t cast this role with a star who can bring her own charisma and personality to the role, you might not even like this character. She’s closer to Martha in “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” than the writers no doubt intended — a drunk married to a drunk who seemingly lives to fight with her spouse. Plus, her nastiness toward Larry and her hot-and-cold relationship with him make you wonder why he’s even interested in her. But, of course, you do know because she’s Julia Roberts and he’s Tom Hanks. Somehow, the movie keeps getting distracted from its own story — how a man reinvents himself and in so doing finds the woman of his dreams. The key problem might be the totally passive nature of its protagonist. In the opening scenes, Larry is shown as a proactive employee full of initiative. Understandably, he loses some of that drive when he gets fired. But from this point on, circumstances and other characters force him to change. He only goes along for the ride when Talia redoes his hair, attire and household or when a drunken Mercedes comes on to him. Even when he does land a job as a short-order cook, it isn’t his idea. How long will it be before Mercedes is ridiculing Larry like she did her husband? Hanks gets good performances from his cast — and that includes himself. He may, if anything, underplay his scenes to let others, especially those playing the speech students, get a chance to shine individually. Hanks’ crew does a fine if undistinguished job on various locations in the Los Angeles area. The junior-college campus and classrooms, the homes, streets, coffee shop and offices all seem very pleasant, which, again, somewhat undermines the grim reality of joblessness in America. source: Yahoo Movies Berita Lain:
